Welcome to the TeachSlough website and our first blog!
Education is always in the news. Everybody feels equipped to make a judgement and dictate what should happen in schools.
I moved house last year and decided to open some boxes that had moved with me and had not been opened for years. I found an old planner and school diary from my probationary year in White Hart Lane School in Haringey. This was back in the 80s, and it was a reminder of how much and how little education has changed.
I can see the notes to differentiate lessons, the paper mark book with highlighted students, notes from phone calls and meetings with parents, my own “marking homework timetable”, the list of commendations and some detentions, and the little faces of young people (now adults with their own children in secondary school or university). Sometimes I have to remind myself that this is what matters and this is the reason why I chose this job.
When I look around Upton Court Grammar School and the schools I visit in this town, I can see a lot of talent, knowledge and wisdom, and I totally agree with Aristotle, who said,
“Those who know, do. Those that understand, teach.”
There are all sorts of teachers and I have seen a fair number over the years. I publically describe the teaching here as “inspirational” and use William Arthur Ward’s definition: “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”
Working in schools, I see teachers as incredible examples of generosity of spirit. Staff support students, coach each other, mentor new teachers, step up for events and school activities, and regularly go above and beyond to support other local schools.
I am grateful that you have chosen to read this blog, making time for us in your busy life, and thank you on behalf of the students, the parents, the local community and the governors in anticipation that you may consider joining us.
Dedicated staff and their continued efforts make working in Slough schools truly special. If you are motivated by the idea of being part of the greatest project of them all and teach, we look forward to hearing from you.
